Forgiveness

All my life I'd thought that to forgive was to be weak; to allow someone - sometimes even the whole world - to walk all over me. To forgive was to allow this treatment.

And if I allowed it, then I'd have only myself to blame for everyone who'd ever hurt me.

Somewhere along the way - it's hard to pinpoint exactly when and where - I realized I'd been mistaken all along. I realized at some point that forgiveness was not a form of weakness. It was a form of POWER!

It still feels a little strange to say, but not forgiving is the weakness. 

Because when I refuse to forgive someone, they have a power over me. Not the other way around! 

And as I sit there stewing over how much I don't forgive them, I'd have the feeling that somehow this unforgiveness would exact some kind of punishment on them; my anger and resentment would somehow settle the score.

But what REALLY happened was that that person would just be living their life! Now I look back and envision them watching a basketball game on their couch with a beer in their hand. And even from that position of leisure they were able to hold so much power over me!!!

So forgiveness became my superpower! Forgiveness enabled me to build boundaries and protect myself from getting hurt. 

And this is just the beginning!!!

In this week's Workshop, I'll tell you how forgiveness is also a form of self compassion! 

Once you understand the power of forgiveness, you will meet all your social interactions with a renewed sense of optimism, confidence, and patience!
